David Smith had a brother, Cpl Don Smith (4 years older than David) who was also in the 2/22nd Infantry Battalion at Rabaul. He too was lost on the Montevideo Maru – the Smith family had been struck by a double tragedy. The photo on the left has been extracted from the photo of the unit cricket team which is shown below.
The photo shows what appears to be an impromptu cricket team for David Smith’s army unit. David is second from the left in the back row.
